Project Worker – YouthZ
YouthZ is a new youth group for 11-14yr olds to run in Meadowfield, Durham on a weekend. Our aim is to promote healthy relationships for young people, who missed key personal development during the formative years because of Covid-19 lockdowns.
We are looking for an experienced support worker to assist in the running of the new YouthZ group. The ideal candidate will have experience of working with children, ideally in this age bracket and will likely come from an educational background. A key element will be to engage with the young people attending to encourage long term attendance and participation. They must be passionate about providing a strong youth provision, able to work on their own initiative and lead by example. There will be monthly offsite visits to a local outdoor education provision and so the individual must also be happy to work outside in all weathers. We will be working closely with other key organisations and so the ability to be flexible and communicate well with both other professionals and young people and their families is vital.
Key responsibilities:
- To build positive relationships with the young people from a range of backgrounds, and their families.
- To help young people who have additional needs, or supporting those who feel less confident.
- At times you may be asked to lead an activity with a small group of children separately to the main group.
- To support the education aims of our project, and support the external visitors who will be working with us to deliver these.
- To help keep accurate records of attendance and training logs.
- To work with the lead coach to develop relevant holiday activities for the group, as an extension of this project.
- To promote responsible & respectful behaviours by modelling these themselves.
- To work at all times within the remit of our policies and procedures, specifically safeguarding, confidentiality, risk assessment and our Equal Opportunities framework.
- This project will be a pilot project, and involvement with the development of the programme will be encouraged.
Candidate requirements:
Candidates must have an enhanced DBS to work with children, or be willing to apply for one and references will be sought.
A clean driving license is essential, and access to your own transport desirable.
Qualifications in Youth Work are desirable, though other qualifications will be considered especially in conjunction with direct worked experience.
Safeguarding training and a paediatric first aid qualification are also desirable.
Full training will be given with regards to the educational aspects being delivered and with regards to our own policies, as mentioned above.
Job Specifics:
Fixed term contract – 39 weeks over a year initially (mostly term time, exact dates will be provided).
Position funded by National Lottery Funds for All – rate is £25 per session, project funded by Mid Durham AAP. Though this fixed contract is for 2hrs/week, there will be the opportunity of additional youth work, during the school holidays, at various locations across Durham CC and availability for this is essential.
Hours: 2 hours Sunday, 11.00-13.00pm, additional holiday rate of pay £12/hour.
